Awel Aman Tawe
Dan McCallum
Awel Aman Tawe (AAT) is a community energy charity that exists to regenerate a former mining community, create jobs and tackle climate change. They research, develop and deliver projects including working through two co-ops to generate cheaper, greener electricity and engaging people in energy education programmes.
AAT has been going for 25 years and successes have included developing the Awel Co-op community wind farm which took 19 years to get through the Planning system and was commissioned in January 2017. They retain wealth in the Welsh economy, keeping money in the area through their solar energy and wind farms.

I co-founded Awel Aman Tawe 1998 to tackle climate change and support regeneration of our former coal mining community. I’ve always been entrepreneurial but we have always struggled with bureaucracy – it took nearly 20 years to build our community wind farm. We did get there in the end and our enterprises will have a turnover of more than £3.5m in 2024. I want to do the Changemakers course to learn how to be a better social entrepreneur and put some bones on the instincts I have developed since 1998.
