As campaigners against the rise in female state pension age return to the Court of Appeal Helen Morrissey, pension specialist at Royal London, said:

“Equalising state pension age between men and women is the right thing to do given that women tend to live longer than men. However, there were gaps in how these changes were communicated with many of those affected saying they did not receive government communications or read any media coverage.

"This left many of these women with inadequate time to prepare and many have experienced financial distress as a result. Clear and regular communication over an extended period of time on issues such as this is absolutely vital if the message is to get through. This is a heart breaking situation that the government needs to learn from.”
