Shirley Garrood joins Royal London board as non-executive director

Royal London today announces the appointment of Shirley Garrood as non-executive director. She will be a member of the Nominations and Governance Committee. Ms Garrood also joins the boards of Royal London Asset Management (RLAM) and RLAM Holdings Ltd and will be a member of RLAM board’s Risk Committee. It is intended that Ms Garrood will assume the role of chair of the RLAM board and of the RLAM board’s Risk Committee in 2021, subject to regulatory approval.

Ms Garrood will stand down as Senior Independent Director and non-executive director of the board of Hargreaves Lansdown plc effective from 31 December 2020.

Ms Garrood’s extensive financial services knowledge and experience as a non-executive director, including chairing a range of committees, at Esure Group plc and Hargreaves Lansdown plc, alongside her board experience at the BBC and Deloitte, will further diversify the skills and experience of Royal London’s board. Her executive career spans a range of financial services companies, particularly in the asset management sector.  As Chief Financial Officer of Henderson Group plc and Chief Operating Officer of two major asset managers, Ms Garrood has a deep understanding of and insight into the workings of asset management firms.

Shirley Garrood was at Henderson Group plc from 2001 – 2014, first as Chief Operating Officer from 2001 – 2009 and then as Chief Financial Officer from 2009 – 2013.  Prior to this she was at Morley Fund Management (Aviva) from 1993 – 2001, latterly as Chief Operating Officer.  From 1983 – 1993 she held roles at a number of financial services companies.  Shirley is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.
