Commenting on the Scottish Government’s Funeral Cost Plan, Louise Eaton-Terry, funeral expert at Royal London, said:

We welcome the Scottish Government recognising that funeral poverty is a growing concern for the bereaved. Our research shows that people are taking on an average debt of around £1,600 to pay for funeral expenses, so it’s good to see Scotland continuing to lead the way, working with the industry and local authorities to promote access to clear and consistent funeral pricing information. It is also encouraging to see the Scottish Government working to raise consumer awareness of funeral costs and the need to plan in advance.

“We now want Westminster to follow Scotland’s lead and acknowledge the impact of funeral poverty in England and Wales and commit to tackling it.
