What's a prepaid funeral plan?

A prepaid funeral plan (sometimes known as a ‘funeral plan’) is a way of paying your funeral costs in advance. In doing so, you relieve the financial burden of your funeral on your loved ones. Be aware though: there may still be costs to pay that aren't covered which your loved ones would need to pay for.

Frequently asked questions

Types of prepaid funeral plans include:

  • single payment in which you pay the full amount upfront
  • monthly instalments which you pay over a fixed period
  • regular monthly payments which you pay to a certain age or until you die

It depends on the funeral plan you take out. For example, not all funeral plans guarantee to cover all costs.

Typically, funeral plans don't include the cost of a burial plot.

No matter what kind of funeral plan you have, if there are costs which aren't covered by your funeral plan or there is a shortfall, your family will need to pay for this.

Subject to eligibility, the government's Funeral Expenses Payment can provide help towards funeral costs.
