Supporting Bloodwise, our national charity partner
Royal London has raised more than £170,000 for our charity partner, Bloodwise (previously known as Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research).
What does the charity do?
Bloodwise is dedicated to improving the lives of people affected by every kind of blood cancer.
Blood cancers are the third biggest cancer killer and the most common form of cancer in children. Every 14 minutes someone in the UK is given the devastating news that they have one of these diseases.
Bloodwise was set up by the Eastwood family in 1960 after their daughter sadly passed away from leukaemia. Since then the charity has funded research which has transformed the lives of thousands of people. Its pioneering research has helped improve the way other cancers are treated too.
The charity exists to fund research into blood cancers to find new, innovative treatments, improve the lives of patients and their families, and one day, hopes to stop blood cancers developing in the first place.
What is Royal London doing to help?
Two years ago we set ourselves a fundraising target of £100,000. We've already smashed it and raised more than £170,000 for Bloodwise. Royal London employees across the country have baked, run, walked and cycled - to name just a few of their fundraising activities.
Earlier this year 750 employees took part in a pedometer challenge and collectively walked about 64,000 miles - the equivalent of walking two and a half times around the world! Now we're working to raise at least a further £68,000 by the end of 2015.
Our support enables Bloodwise to continue their life-saving research into blood cancer, for example funding clinical trials where patients receive brand new, innovative treatments for their cancer, which they wouldn’t have had access to before. Clinical trials are crucial for bringing new drugs to the market, which save lives and offer fewer side effects than traditional treatments such as chemotherapy. The funds raised during the third year of our partnership will have supported a group of 21 families who have been affected by blood cancer to go on an all-expenses-paid trip to Disneyland Paris. Gruelling treatments, hours spent in the hospital and the emotional strain takes its toll on normal family life. This trip offers a much needed break, allowing families to spend quality time enjoying themselves together, away from the stressors of their disease.
