Royal London reacts to overhaul of Scottish death certification
14 May 2015
Simon Cox, a funeral cost expert at Royal London, said:
“We welcome news that death certification in Scotland is being overhauled. People who choose cremation will no longer have to pay around £170 for medical forms, bringing financial savings to many bereaved families. Further savings of around £18 should also be made by abolishing the requirement for a crematorium Medical Referee. We urge the Government to take the same approach in England and Wales to help alleviate rising funeral poverty, which has now reached a phenomenal £142m in the UK. This change also raises a question for funeral plan providers to clarify what they will do for funeral plan customers living in Scotland who have already bought a plan with these costs already built in?”
